Problem Activating Windows 7 OEM - Repaired Computer

By Peter Bromberg

You bought an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit for custom built computer. Recently the motherboard failed and the product was discontinued so you had to purchase a new motherboard and processor. Since the old Windows copy was not compatible with the new hardware, you had to install a new copy of Windows7, and it will not activate.

OEM versions of Windows 7 are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following:

- OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel

- OEM licenses are tied to the first computer you install and activate it on

- OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

- OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system

You can try using phone activation and explain your case and see if they might be able to help you:

Activate Windows 7 manually:
1. Click Start, and in the Search box type :  slui.exe 4
2. Press ENTER on your Keyboard
3. Select your Country.
4. Select the Phone Activation option, and hold on for a real person
