This explains about the limitations of the XML Data type in Sql Server in terms of creating Index

XML Data type is spite of its powerful usage, it has got some limitations especially while creating index in the table. XML Data type cannot be used to create an index with the former being as the key column in the index.

However, this can be included as data in a clustered index or explicitly added to a nonclustered index by using the INCLUDE keyword when the nonclustered index is created.
