Oracle has a function by the name, CONVERT used to convert one character set strings to other character set strings.

Syntax: CONVERT (str, charSetTo, [charSetFrom])

Ex1: CONVERT('4/3/10' DATE 'MDY');
This returns 3APR10 as the result.

Ex2: CONVERT('4/3/10' DATE 'DMY');
This returns 04MAR10 as the result

Note: Here, character set from need not be given, which is optional
